E3 2008 Fallout: What We Missed (Or Didn’t Have Time For)
July 31st, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features, Summer 08. [ Comments: 1 ]

We have a long list of explanations for the games that we didn’t write up previews for on QP after this year’s E3 Media & Business Summit… and this is no place to air ‘em. We will, however, drop you a little rundown of some games we feel need mentioning here on the site that just didn’t make the cut. E3’s old news, right?! Here’s our wrapup of what we missed, what we loved, and what ain’t worth your time — consider this a jumbled version of QP’s Best of E3 Awards, except there are no awards (because that’d be unnecessary and ridiculous).

E3 2008: Dead Space Hands-On
July 29th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

In years passed, fanboys and critics alike have come to expect little more than sequels and derivative ideas from industry giant Electronic Arts. Whether it be the de rigeur Madden every August or forgettable titles like Black, EA hasn’t done much traditionally to earn our trust with new intellectual properties.

Surprisingly though, the publisher has changed their attitude dramatically over the past year or so and produced some outstanding new properties — last year’s Skate and Rock Band being standouts — and this E3, the tone remained the same. The same people that brought us Battlefield: Bad Company most recently are now bringing the “first-person platformer” to life in the form of Mirror’s Edge. Additionally, we got to spend some time walking/limping/crawling around the mutation filled halls of EA Redwood’s new survival/horror game Dead Space.

E3 2008: Fable 2 Hands-On Impressions
July 28th, 2008 by Katie Lind under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

Several years ago when a little Xbox game called Project Ego was announced, I was right on board. The game was an ambitious project that would immerse the gamer in a dynamic and constantly changing world, where every action had a consequence. The game was soon renamed Fable and was built up to an insane level of hype that all but guaranteed disappointment. Sure enough, the game shipped and didn’t quite deliver on a lot of the expectations. The game was far more linear than what had been promised, with limited and predictable social interactions within a traditional fantasy setting. Now, the game’s sequel, Fable 2, is looking like it will make good on many of the promises made by its predecessor so many years ago.

E3 2008: Flower Hands-On
July 28th, 2008 by Katie Lind under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: 1 ]

With all the complex and wanna-be cerebral games flooding E3, Flower was a nice change of pace. The PSN game puts the gamer in control of the wind, using the SIXAXIS controller to blow a stream of flower petals through a dull landscape, gradually bringing color to the world as you blow through patterns of flowers.

It might sound silly and boring, but the game was oddly entrancing and relaxing. The soft sounds of gentle wind and simple musical chimes draw you in, and with the excellent use of the SIXAXIS motion control, you can’t help but get lost in it. It looks like it will be an excellent game to ease your mind and your senses in between all the chaotic shooters and sprawling action games that are being released (like predecessor fLOw was, released last year from That Game Company also for PSN). You’ll be able to take a trip with Flower “When it’s done.”, as it’s a game with one of those release dates.

E3 2008: LEGO Batman Impressions
July 25th, 2008 by Katie Lind under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

Last week at E3 (yes, more from E3. And still more to come! This “real life” thing is really rather overrated, no?) we popped into Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s white room to sit on white couches and take a peek at some of their new games. One of their main games that they were showcasing was LEGO Batman, to be released this fall on the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, PSP and Windows PCs (in other words, everything but the N-Gage.) Some impressions and screenshots after the break.

E3 2008: Resistance 2 Impressions
July 25th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

After watching Insomniac President Ted Price almost fail to get through the demo level of Resistance 2 during the Sony Press Conference, we met up with him at the Sony room during E3 2008 last week to get a better idea of how R2’s single-player campaign will play out, how the 60-player online matches are supposed to work and hell, to give him another chance to impress us with his alien stomping abilities. You’ll have to hit the break to find out how he fared.

E3 2008: I Wanna Cast Magic Missile! Square Enix Lineup Impressions
July 23rd, 2008 by Katie Lind under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

While Final Fantasy XIII was pretty much MIA at E3 this year (other than its being announced for the Xbox 360), Square Enix still had plenty of JRPG goodness for those of us who love our silly characters with wacky hair and even wackier names. Their E3 lineup was mainly a portable affair, with Dragon Quest IV, Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger on the DS, leaving Infinite Undiscovery all alone in the land of console games. Hit the jump for a quick rundown of the games and initial impressions from Square Enix’s space at E3.

E3 2008: The Halo Wars Begin
July 23rd, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

Thematically speaking, there was quite a difference between Microsoft and Sony’s press rooms at E3 this year. Like their consoles, Microsoft’s room was lit off-white with a hint of green hues whereas Sony’s was dark, with sharply accented lighting. In fact, between the lighting and the oxygen being pumped into the room, it was quite a challenge concentrating on the information-heavy Halo Wars gameplay instructions we were being given early in the a.m. on E3’s final day.

E3 2008: It’s a Mad, Madworld
July 23rd, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: 1 ]

What else can we say about Sega Platinum Games’ Madworld that hasn’t already been said? The game’s goddamn crazy. It’s violent, funny, and surprisingly… on the Nintendo Wii exclusively. It walks, talks and speaks like a spawn of God Hand, No More Heroes and Manhunt 2, dressed by Frank Miller. Though we couldn’t get our hands on the playable build demonstrated for us by the folks from Sega, our eyes and ears were pleasantly surprised.

E3 2008: Legendary Impressions
July 22nd, 2008 by Katie Lind under Previews, Summer 08. [ Comments: none ]

At E3, we sat down with the guys behind Legendary, a new FPS coming to a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC near you this September. While we didn’t get any actual hands-on with the game, we were shown the beginning introduction to the story as well as snippets throughout the game, highlighting various features and showcasing various strengths (and weaknesses). Hit the jump for more.
