Casual Monday — Faux-Fighting Edition
August 11th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: none ]

We like this week’s Casual Monday, Ragdoll Masters, for a whole slew of reasons, none of those being its abilities as a fighting game. While the games creators would have you believe “In this game you control a stylized martial arts master, making his way through stronger and stronger opponents with spectacular moves and impressive blows.”, we know the truth: ragdoll physics in this game result in sloppy controls. Which, oddly, works out for the better — and something they shout tout!

Week-End Podcast Roundup — Xbox Live Addiction Edition
August 8th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: none ]

Normally we don’t spend all our time with Xbox 360 employing its hard drive, playing Xbox Live Arcade games, but this month we’re making serious exception. Maybe you missed us last week when we told you about the Summer’s End XBLA blowout taking place, dubbed the “Summer of Arcade“? Either way, our weekend will assuredly be filled with terrifying geometric shapes and time-reversal gameplay (with reviews of both coming early next week) — how about you? In case you can’t handle the “steep” price for Braid, there are always a mountain of podcasts to check out.

Casual Tuesday — Only Bet On Yourself Edition
August 5th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: none ]

While we begged and pleaded our esteemed colleagues to write yesterday’s Casual Monday feature, clearly the day passed without so much as a peep from us regarding free games for you to enjoy. Thusly, we have come to the should have been obvious realization: the only real motivating factor is money. Except for the people that make these Casual Monday Tuesday releases, that is! This week we’re bringing you somewhat of a marketing tool for the upcoming PS3 release The Last Guy, in the form of it’s Japanese website. Hit the bump for details.

Week-End Podcast Roundup — AFK Edition
August 1st, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: none ]

While away from QPHQ, it’s always difficult to put together these podcast roundups because we’re not exactly streaming them through our non-existent iPhones. We push on though, tough as it may be, and bring you yet another week of audible goodness. Though we’ve added them in the past, the CAG Foreplay podcast featuring the Shipwrecks adds a much needed touch of humanity into what’s become an ever increasing “insider” feel to all these ‘casts. Either way, hit the bump and add some free information to your computer.

E3 2008 Fallout: What We Missed (Or Didn’t Have Time For)
July 31st, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features, Summer 08. [ Comments: 1 ]

We have a long list of explanations for the games that we didn’t write up previews for on QP after this year’s E3 Media & Business Summit… and this is no place to air ‘em. We will, however, drop you a little rundown of some games we feel need mentioning here on the site that just didn’t make the cut. E3’s old news, right?! Here’s our wrapup of what we missed, what we loved, and what ain’t worth your time — consider this a jumbled version of QP’s Best of E3 Awards, except there are no awards (because that’d be unnecessary and ridiculous).

Casual Monday — We Heart the Behemoth Edition
July 28th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: none ]

Our love for the casual fare offered by indie developer The Behemoth has been aired on QP before, but we thought we’d go ahead and reaffirm that love this morning by presenting you with Dad ‘n Me, a cutesy/brutally violent beat ‘em up hosted by the folks at Newgrounds.com. While its depth is up for debate, Dad ‘n Me caught our attention for its characteristic art style and River City Ransom-esque gameplay. If you’re playing from the inside of a cubicle, you may want to go ahead and turn the sound down now — though you’ll be missing out on a fairly large chunk of the experience as Dad ‘n Me’s sound effects are a big part of what sets apart games by The Behemoth. We recommend large headphones, dark room, wide keyboard… that kinda thing. Oh, and we’d be jerks if we weren’t to mention that the game controls entirely using the arrow keys and the standard “WASD” setup simultaneously, instigating a feeling somewhat akin to extended PSP use.

Did this game make us that much more excited for the eventual release of Castle Crashers? Yup. Did we look at the Castle Crashers kiosk longingly while we rushed to meet with SEGA? Ditto.

Week-End Podcast Roundup — Back from L.A. Edition
July 25th, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: none ]

“Shameless!”, you say. Pshhht… alright, yeah, it’s a bit shameless. Where the hell else would we get to stick pictures of QP editors looking ridiculous though? And next to a Brotherhood of Steel statue, none the less? Seriously though, our lengthy rundown of Fallout 3 goes up tomorrow and we’re getting ready to give out a big fat bag of E3 schwag (including one particular Fallout 3 item) at the next Philly Gamer’s tourney, though it looks like we still have a couple of weeks. At the very least, you have a whole bunch of catching up to do on your weekly podcast quota. E3 flooded out iTunes with more audio and video than even Noah could handle, what with his giant boat and all. And not that we’re braggarts or anything (we’re totally braggarts), but the upcoming podcast from Quarterplay is very much in the works so keep your ears to the… internet…

Casual Monday — You Have to Shoot the Ragdoll Edition
July 21st, 2008 by Benjamin Gilbert under Features. [ Comments: 1 ]

We’re no stranger to physics-based Flash games on QP, so it should come to you as no surprise that we’re featuring Ragdoll Cannon as our Casual Monday headliner this week. Found over at Kongregate.com but originating from the head of Johnny_K, Ragdoll Cannon (not to be confused with the Ragdoll Canon set forth after the first crusade) grants you control over a simple cannon loaded full of ragdolls. Located elsewhere in the frame is a rectangle marked “here” that you must direct one of your infinite number of ragdolls to, thus allowing you to proceed.

Week-End Podcast Roundup — What The F&$# Is A Podcast? Edition
July 18th, 2008 by Shawn Annable under Features. [ Comments: none ]

Since QP’er Ben Gilbert lived the high life this week demoing some new games at E3 and getting drunk at 10 a.m., he’s busy writing up his impressions and fending off a workload hangover. And thus, this Friday, I am your podcast master. Bow Down to Mola Shawn!
