No, we’re not going to talk about some of the bad press the Resident Evil 5 trailers received this past year. (Sorry Mr. Croal, we respect you, but if you can’t explain your point without saying ’sort of’ a dozen times, then you should rethink your argument.) Aside from the fact that mass murdering is the only solution to a zombie infection, Capcom’s latest endeavor looks like it’s doing the right thing by keeping the gameplay familiar and pumping up the zombie factor by about 10%. Hit the break for our thoughts on Resident Evil 5 trailers and screens.
Chris Redfield returns as the hero in this installment which takes place in various locations throughout Africa. Capcom boasts a “revolution” for the series in added gameplay, new weapons, and smarter AI (smart zombies?) That’s what they boast. What we see is classic Resident Evil with stunning graphics, some more guns and yes, more zombies. Revolution? Don’t break out into those drum circles just yet.
Even if this game doesn’t revolutionize the series it seems to be doing one thing right. It looks to be taking the massive crowd control concepts from Dead Rising and converting them into useful close quarters combat, enabling a good mix of hand-to-hand combat and gunplay not seen in previous Resident Evil titles. I would even approach the term ‘brawler’ on this one (though too much would cripple the feel of the game), but if we get some melee moves — nothing fancy now — to mix up the stand still and shoot tactics, Resident Evil 5 may actually feel more like the revolution Capcom is preaching.
Not to be misunderstood however, this game looks very good and we’re eagerly awaiting more details (and perhaps a hands-on session finally?) at E3.
