June NPDs: Metal Gear Solid Makes PS3 Happy
July 22nd, 2008 News

Too busy reading about E3 to pay any attention to this month’s NPDs? Us too, until now.

We already mentioned Wii overtaking Xbox 360 in US sales, but the June NPDs have a whole lot more data to be analyzed and fed in to the matrix.

For starters, Metal Gear Solid 4 tops the software list with 774,600 sold exclusively for PS3. This gave PS3 a major bump this month… but they still finished behind Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, which took June’s top spot in hardware… again. Looking for the numbers and maybe some analysis? Jump it.

This month is a far cry from previous months, where GTA IV (which isn’t even in the top ten anymore) saw gagillions of units sold, which boosted 360 sales. Now it looks like it’s PS3s time to shine, in the enormous, unstoppable profit machine that is Nintendo Wii and DS. Nintendo’s got 6 of the top 10 games, including Guitar Hero: On Tour. Overall, the industry still hauled in $1.69 billion in June, laughing in the face of economic struggle and hardship.

Here are the actual sales numbers (thanks to Gamasutra, linked above):

Software:

1. Metal Gear Solid 4 (PlayStation 3, Konami) - 774.6K (not including hardware bundled copies)
2. Guitar Hero: On Tour (Nintendo DS, Activision) - 422.3K
3. Ninja Gaiden II (Xbox 360, Tecmo/MGS) - 372.7K
4. Wii Fit w/balance board (Wii, Nintendo) - 372.7K
5. Wii Play w/remote (Wii, Nintendo) - 359.1K
6. Battlefield: Bad Company (Xbox 360, EA) - 346.8K
7. Mario Kart (Wii, Nintendo) - 322.4K
8. Lego Indiana Jones (Wii, LucasArts) - 294.5K
9. Lego Indiana Jones (DS, LucasArts) - 267.8K
10. Lego Indiana Jones (PS2, LucasArts) - 260.3K

Hardware:

Nintendo DS - 783K
Wii - 666.7K
PlayStation 3 - 405.5K
PSP - 337.4K
Xbox 360 - 219.8K
PS2 - 188.8K

Of note in the hardware numbers, though somewhat expected, is the absolute trouncing of Xbox 360 by the Playstation 3. The two hardware giants have gone back and forth over the past year on a month-to-month basis, but in June, no spin that Microsoft can conjure will possibly explain this. We’ll see if that bold statement that Don Mattrick made during the Microsoft Press Conference will hold up with numbers like this, or more importantly, if numbers like this actually hold.
