Philly Gamers Rock The House, Best Buy Hooks It Up
June 29th, 2008 Features, Summer 08

We here at QP took a field trip to Best Buy in NE Philly today to check out the free Guitar Hero 3 tourney and kick off the start of a crazy summer that’s sure to include some classic tournaments, big prizes, and most importantly, good times. We talked with the heads of Philly Gamers and got the low down on what they have planned for the summer. Buck up Philadelphia — we know there’s a gaming culture in you somewhere, and these guys are trying to bring it out.

Alex Mora heads the organization Philly Gamers. Their goal is to bring a gamer-oriented tournament circuit to Philadelphia that not only caters to the hardcore paycheck earners, but also the less competitive who are looking to have fun and possibly win some dope prizes. These guys are dedicated too. Working full time jobs, managing families, and a full fledged tournament enterprise is no easy juggling act. On top of that, Mora emphasizes that at this point “It’s all about the gamers… any money we earn goes directly into event planning, equipment maintenance, and expansion.” And with help from sponsors like Best Buy, Steel Series, and Glitch Gear, Philly Gamers seems to be on the right track to provide Philadelphians with a positive, gamer friendly community. We’ll be covering as many of their events as we can throughout the summer and will be looking forward to providing you with updates and tournament info, which you can find here.

In other Philadelphia related news Philly Gamers and Best Buy held a Guitar Hero 3 tournament today to promote the release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. The Best Buy in North East Philadelphia is located at the Red Lion Plaza at 9940 East Roosevelt Blvd, and is apparently the first Best Buy in the North East (USA) to have room specifically dedicated to games and gaming.

The Final Battle

They plan on holding at least one tournament a month with titles including Madden 09 and Rock Band. The interesting part of the latter tourney is that you will not only be judged on your skill, but your performance and style. Prizes for various tournaments will include iPod’s, Nintendo DS’, gift cards, and games — among other things. We’ll keep you on top of upcoming Best Buy tourney’s as well.
