OK, so the photo probably isn’t for the same NPD (it’s definitely not), but the letters are the same…isn’t that enough for you? Similarly, May’s NPD numbers are more of the same, with one major exception– PS3 outsold 360. We’ve got lots of spin and interpretation here, so let’s get started.
The Wii and DS topped the hardware battle, each individually doubling PS3 and 360 sales combined. Overall, though, console sales are weak compared to game sales. NPD predicts that more console sales will be reflected in the June NPD because of graduation and Father’s Day (who wants to give their dad a Wii for Father’s Day?)
Grand Theft Auto IV continues to annihilate the competition, most notabaly on Xbox 360. It is selling twice as many copies on Microsoft’s system than on it’s previously-exclusive Sony competitor. That’s about the only good news for Microsoft this month, though.
Wii has all of the games in the top five that aren’t GTA, including Mario Kart Wii (second month in second place), Wii Fit and Wii Play (though that could just be is certainly because of the remote).
Guitar Hero III is shredding face on Rock Band, outselling it 2.5m to 1.3m.
As always Wired’s Chris Kohler has the spin from the companies.
And, if you’re as depressed as we are that Wii Fit is the THIRD best selling game in the country, maybe this will cheer you up:
